Young Carers

Young carers are children and young people under the age of 18 who are providing care and support to another family member. Many young carers take on roles and responsibilites that should not be expected of a person of their age. They may be caring for a parent, or, because of a parental disability, they may have taken on a parenting role towards their younger brothers and sisters.

Young carers can suffer from isolation and bullying in school and many miss out on childhood experiences that most take for granted.

Portsmouth Young Carers project supports almost 700 young carers in the city. This ranges from one to one support, support in education, and group work.

If you would like more information about the Young Carers project, please contact the Carers Centre on 023 9285 1864 or 023 9275 6780. Alternatively, if you would like to refer a young person to the project, please complete the young carers referral form.
